As sub-consultants to the Engineers of this multi-million dollar parking garage and plaza deck rehabilitation project, we were asked to design interim site furnishings and landscape design for the public plaza space located in Harlem's cultural and commercial center. With much of the Plaza programmed and occupied by events throughout the year, the new serpentine ribbons of modular concrete planters with alternating steel benches now ring the Plaza's perimeter. In close proximity to bus stops, street vendors and constant pedestrian flow, the benches offer ample seating opportunity and experience. Given the tough urban conditions, hardy June-flowering Silver bell trees, ever-blooming Roses, and evergreen groundcover were selected for their hardiness and year round interest.
